WebP can be **lossless**, meaning it preserves **exactly the same quality as PNG** but with **smaller file sizes**. JPG, on the other hand, **destroys data**—the worst choice for manga, as it **blurs lines and creates artifacts**. So no, it’s not a bad format; it’s just **more modern and better optimized**. And nothing stops anyone from converting the images to JPG later if they really want.

sure but aren't these being converted from the original jpeg source to webp in the first place? what's the point of that other than file size? it makes no sense referencing artifacts and blurred lines because doing a conversion from jpeg to webp will keep those anyway.

That 'enhancement' will still result in a degradation of the image, ie loss of detail, no matter how miniscule

WebP is an interim format as compared to the official JPEG-XL which is the newer standard and evolution of Jpeg. Jpeg-XL also has a lossless format BUT it can also be made lossy if that is desired. Thus, there isn't a need to change filename suffixes.
